Here is a workaround for this issue : create your save game in singleplayer and then save it go back to menu and now start a new multiplayer game with your already created save game. Connection errors in multiplayer games (no server) will most likely be caused by your internet settings on your router. My buddy and his wife are having the exact same issue, don't think they ever resolved it.
